What are Biopharmaceuticals

What are biopharmaceuticals you might ask? Biopharmaceuticals are complex medicines or medical drugs made from living cells or organisms using biotechnology. An important advantage to them that should be noted is the fact that biological molecules are very intricate while regular drugs are small and simple.

These bigger builds allow them to have higher specificity, or work more efficiently, and off-target incidents are now less likely to occur and harm the patient in a different way. One potential disadvantage, however, is the delivery of the drug to the patient. These types of drugs have to be injected or given through IV drips as the chane of the stomach breaking them down are very high; this causes the drug to be basically useless as it can’t pass through the digestive tract and reach where it is supposed to target. Biopharmaceuticals are very popular in cancer treatment, but how exactly are they used?


Biopharmaceuticals In Cancer Treatment 

There are multiple types of cancer biopharmaceuticals and four of the most known ones are Monoclonal Antibiotics, Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors, CAR-T Cell Therapy, and Antibody-Drug Conjugates(ADCs).

Monoclonal antibiotics are lab-made proteins that attach to specific targets on cancer cells to flag them or in other cases destroy them, a key target example is the trastuzumab for breast cancer cells. 

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors block proteins stopping immune cells and helps allow the body to fight tumors, so the body has strength to fight off untamed tumor cells itself, or as much as it can. 

CAR-T Cell Therapy is when patients' immune cells are re-engineered in a lab to go hunt and kill cancer cells in the body. 

Last but not least, Antibody-Drug Conjugates or ADCs are targeted biological packets that deliver toxic chemicals directly to the cancer cells without harming any healthy tissues. Out of all the above, monoclonal antibodies are the most widely used pharmaceuticals in cancer treatment. 55% of the entire oncology treatments start with or use monoclonal antibodies as their key treatment method, showing exactly how often biopharmaceuticals are being used in cancer treatments.


Biopharmaceuticals Growth in Recent Years

  Recently due to biopharmaceuticals being helpful for cancer treatment, the oncologies spending money on these cancer medicines sky-rocketed, hitting up to 252 billion dollars and projected to cross 400 billion dollars. The money going into biopharmaceuticals are the most efficient ways to track growth specifically in recent years as money is necessary when researching or using biopharmaceuticals so it can overall predict how important it has become in the world of medicine. More research shows biopharmaceuticals to be a huge breakthrough in cancer treatment and this is establishing biopharmaceuticals' place in our world.
